One perk of being my age is that I remember when there was no fast forward or DVR or the TV. There was NBC, CBS, ABC, and that channel Sesame Street came on. We didn’t know what the name was like we did the other channels.

Besides the shows our parents let us watch, and there weren’t that many in our house, there were commercials with really cool jingles. We all like to think that marketing is new and creative today with all our social media and millions of dollars spent. But listen to this campaign.

In the 1950s, Ken-L-Ration was the major sponsor of a local TV show in New York City called, “We Love Dogs.” Each week a dog or puppy was featured as the prize in a contest.

Viewers were invited to write and send letters to explain why they should win the dog. The next week, the winning letter was read and the winner appeared on the show and was given the dog.

The brand is most notable for a popular advertising jingle from the 1960s. The jingle was based on the song “My Dog’s Bigger Than Your Dog” written by Tom Paxton. The advertisement consisted of two children, one of whom was a young Richard Marx singing

My dog’s faster than your dog,
My dog’s bigger than yours.
My dog’s better ’cause he gets Ken-L Ration,
My dog’s better than yours.

Ken-L Ration has lean red beef,
And lots of other good things,
When my mum goes to the store,
She buys a million cans or more…

I don’t think we’re going to do any elaborate dog giveaway to promote NEW PAWS or a dog food manufacturer. But I do love the idea of kids arguing about who has the faster bigger, better dog. You guys can all think you have the best dog. You’re wrong! My dog is better. But here’s the deal. We all have the best dog no matter the breed or the food or anything else. Only your specific love can turn your dog into your best dog. That’s all that matters.

Today we still have fourteen dogs who know they are the best dogs. They are simply waiting for someone to love them. Maybe it’s you. Come in and meet a few and see if one of them is the dog you can sing about and brag about.

I promise we won’t make you sing the jingle. Unless you want to.

By the way. Want to see how things have changed? Read the lyrics from on the album songs the jingle was based on. KInd of horrifying but you have my permission to laugh. Cause it’s hysterical today.

Tom Paxton – My Dogs Bigger Than Your Dog Lyrics
from the album: I’m The Man That Built The Bridges (1962)

My dog’s bigger than your dog,
My dog’s bigger than yours,
My dog’s bigger
And he chases mailmen,
My dog’s bigger than yours,

My dog’s better than your dog,
My dog’s better than yours,
His name is King,
And he had puppies,
My dog’s better than yours.

My dad’s tougher than your dad,
My dad’s tougher than yours,
My dad’s tougher
And he yells louder and
My dad’s tougher than yours.

My dad’s louder than your dad,
My dad’s louder than yours,
Momma buys a new dress,
Daddy makes noises,
My dad’s louder than yours.

Our car’s faster than your car,
Our car’s faster than yours,
It has a louder horn,
It bumps other cars,
Our car’s faster than yours.

Our car’s older than your car,
Our car’s older than yours,
It stops running and Daddy kicks the fenders,
Our car’s older than yours.

My Mom’s older than your Mom,
My Mom’s older than yours,
She takes smelly baths
She hides the gray hairs
My Mom’s older than yours.

My Mom’s funnier than your Mom,
My Mom’s funnier than yours,
Her hair is pretty and
It changes colors,
