The other day I saw a plaque that was all about loving someone more than the other one and what that means. More than fights, more than distance, well, you get the picture.
As silly as it sounds I sing to my dog all the time. In fact, I sing a certain song when it’s time for the last call of the night in the yard. Then there’s another song to signal when it’s time for bed and still another song I sing after I whisper a secret to him every night that he’s forbidden to tell anyone. Yeah, all true.
I also sing to him a song telling him that he’s the best doggie in the world, world, world and that I’m the best mommy in the world, world, world. Smitten much? We have this conversation where I tell him I love him more and I look into his eyes and I know he’s telling me that he loves me more. Yes, I can read dog eyes.
When I say I love him more, I don’t mean I love him more than he loves me. I mean I love him more than the bad days ahead of us, I love him more than the chewed-up shoes, the destroyed glasses, the getting out of the gate and leading us on a merry neighborhood chase close to midnight when it’s nineteen degrees outside. I love him more than vet bills than worms than the middle of the night vomit, and all of the things we talk about after the fact.
The thing about getting a dog is that you don’t anticipate all the bad things that could happen. You fall in love and you don’t realize that it’s that love that will get you through whatever happens.
Our dogs add more to our lives than we could ever have anticipated. The very cool thing about our dogs is that they love us more, too. That means that if they are the kind of dog who doesn’t like to be hugged and you go ahead and hug them they still love you. They love you when you forget to fill their water bowl or refuse them one more snack, one more walk, or even if you keep them awake with your snoring. Guilty.
The difference is that dogs don’t remember all the times you screwed up. I’m thinking in the battle of who loves who the most maybe dogs probably are the winner. But you know what? It doesn’t even matter. Remember that the next time something big happens. Because it will. But it won’t matter because we love and we are loved.
